WAA's Film Features

On February 20th, 2009, WAA hosted a showing of the documentary Vincent Who? with its director Curtis Chin following with a discussion session afterwards. Vincent Who?, exactly as the title suggests, is a work aimed at reminding our generation of the Chinese American man who was beaten to death in Detroit, Michigan, June of 1982. With Vincent Chin's two murderers originally only receiving a plea bargain, this hate crime inspired a nationwide civil rights movement and a particularly poignant rallying point for the Asian American community.

WAA will also be screening Santa Mesa at 6pm Tuesday February 24, 2009 in PNW 212. Last year, this movie was awarded Best Dramatic Narrative Feature at the San Diego Asian American Film Festival, Best Feature Film at the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, and the Special Jury Prize at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival among many other honorable mentions.
The movie begins with 12 year-old Hector arriving in Manila to live with his grandmother after the death of his mother. Hector soon falls in with the neighborhood street gang but meets Jose, a photographer, who takes him and attempts to pull him back from them. Jose has a secretive past of his own -- a daughter who doesn't know her father's identity. The story begins to unravel and take new turns as Hector discovers more.

This film will be screened in April~ Stay tuned for the exact and location.
